MONTREAL- After 24 years under Gilles Vaillaincourt’s reign, Laval has a new mayor.
Mouvement Lavallois’ Marc Demers, a former police officer led the polls with 44 per cent of the vote.
Former Liberal MNA Jean-Claude Gobé came in second place at 24 per cent.

Demers now has the task of rebuilding Laval’s reputation.
In May, longtime mayor Gilles Vaillancourt was charged with a dozen corruption-related charges, including two counts of gangsterism.

In June, the city was put under trusteeship after corruption allegations were revealed at the Charbonneau Commission.
Soon after, interim mayor Alexandre Duplessis quit after a controversy allegedly involving extortion and prostitutes.
