SASKATOON – The jury in the inquest into the death of Brandon Daniels has made a dozen recommendations to prevent another tragedy like his.

Daniels died while in a Saskatoon police cell in 2010, twelve hours after being arrested for public intoxication.

It was later determined he died from an overdose of Tylenol.

His family says he suffered from mental illness and wasn’t taking his proper medication at the time.

The week-long inquest heard from 15 witnesses, including Sergeant Randy Huisman, who said police made a fatal decision not seeking medical attention for Daniels.

A six-person jury determined Daniel’s death was an accidental overdose, not a suicide.

They came back with 12 detailed recommendations including having paramedics staffed 24/7 at police detention, plus medical support staff available at the Lighthouse.

The jury wants the health region’s brief detox unit expanded with more beds, more collaboration and training and a review of the 9-1-1 codes for a person in distress.

They also recommended the pilot program Police and Crisis Team (PACT) be extended for at least a year.

The lawyer representing Daniels’ family says, overall, they were satisfied with the process of this inquiry.
