In a release Friday afternoon, the New Brunswick RCMP said members of the Oromocto RCMP and the Fredericton Police Force responded to a report of shots fired on Leafwood Drive in the Hanwell trailer park around 4:30 a.m.

Two people were taken to hospital with what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries and the Fredericton Police Force arrested one person at the scene, the release said.

“Other individuals that were believed to be involved in the incident fled the scene in a vehicle,” it said.

Shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, police issued an emergency alert saying they were looking for “individuals known to be armed and dangerous” in the Oromocto area, about 20 minutes southeast of Fredericton.

About an hour and a half later, the alert was cancelled after the suspect vehicle was found in the Longs Creek area. A 22-year-old man was taken into custody.

“The Alert Ready has concluded, and residents can return to their regular activities,” said Cpl. Hans Ouellette of the New Brunswick RCMP in the release. “This is still very much an active investigation. If you have any information that could assist investigators, please contact police right away.”

Earlier in the day, Fredericton Police Force spokesperson Sonya Gilks said the shooting was not random and the victims and suspects were known to each other.

Residents of the trailer park were evacuated and neighbours were in a hold and secure position, but Gilks said shortly after 10 a.m. that people can return home.

The file has since been turned over to the RCMP.

In an interview, Ouellette, the spokesperson for the RCMP, said the area of the trailer park where the shooting happened is divided jurisdiction with the Fredericton Police Force.

He said he was pleased with the collaboration between the two forces Friday.

“We’re always very happy to collaborate with the Fredericton Police Force and other police forces that we share jurisdiction with,” he said.
