Ontario Provincial Police on Monday walked back comments that a serious collision along Highway 401 near Ayr, Ont. had resulted in the deaths of two people.
The two-vehicle collision occurred in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Trussler Road in Blanford-Blenheim around 11:18 a.m. and left the highway shut down for hours.
Police announced Monday afternoon that two people had died in the crash, however police later issued a correction stating that lifesaving efforts had been successful.
“Info was provided that two people had died, however lifesaving efforts were successful but they are still in life threatening condition. Further updates to follow,” read a tweet from Cst. Patti Cote of West Region OPP.
In a previous video update, Cote noted that one other person had also been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, while four others were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to serious in nature
The crash had closed a massive stretch on the highway with cars being diverted from Oxford Road 29 to Cedar Creek Road to bypass the collision.
All eastbound lanes of the highway had been reopened by 4:30 p.m.
