Province to build nine new joint-use schools

SASKATOON – Nine new joint-use schools will be built in Saskatchewan.

Premier Brad Wall made the announcement in Saskatoon on Tuesday.

“Saskatchewan is experiencing remarkable growth across the province, and some of it is right in the classroom,” said Wall.

“We need to meet the challenges of growth and have adequate infrastructure in place.”

The schools will be built in four cities experiencing unprecedented growth.

Four will be built in Saskatoon: Evergreen, Hampton Village, Rosewood and Stonebridge.

Martensville and Warman will each get a new school and the remaining three will be in Regina: Harbour Landing, Northwest and Southeast.

The government plans on building them through a public private partnership.

“This approach will put our students first, provide them with the best learning environments, and do so much quicker than government could build schools the conventional way,” said Wall

The chair of Saskatoon Public Schools Division is welcoming the news.

“Saskatoon Public Schools has seen unprecedented growth in the last few years,” said Ray Morrison.

“We need to ensure we can provide the right facilities to support learning for our students.”

Enrolment at elementary schools in Saskatoon increased by 4,256 students since 2007, up 20 per cent.

Similar growth was also experienced at Regina elementary schools, with 2,715 more students in classes since 2007, an increase of 15 per cent.

In Warman, enrolment is up 90 per cent in the same time period while Martensville is up 52 per cent.

The nine joint-use schools between Catholic and public school divisions will allow for shared programming opportunities and maintenance costs.
