Lanni Marchant sets new Canadian record at Toronto marathon

TORONTO – Lanni Marchant set a new Canadian record at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Sunday with a time of 2:27:59, nearly four minutes better than her previous best time.

Marchant’s run bested the previous national record of 2:28:36 set by Oshawa, Ont., native Sylvia Ruegger 28 years ago.

Marchant will take home $28,000 for her record-breaking time.

The London, Ont., native placed 44th at the women’s marathon at the world track and field championships in Moscow last summer.

Canada had not had a woman run the distance at a world championship since 2003 prior to the Moscow race.
