Environmentally-friendly light bulbs a fire risk

The push is on for Canadians to use compact fluorescent light bulbs in their light fixtures to help save the environment. But it could be putting their safety at risk.

The Saint John fire department is pushing for an educational program that will teach residents what types of light fixtures can be used with CFLs, and what fixtures are a risk.

While CFLs use less energy, and reduce strain on the environment, they are not meant to be used in every room in your house. Similarly, there are certain fixtures compact fluorescent light bulbs should not be used with. CFLs should not be used in enclosed fixtures or in rooms where there is a high moisture level, such as in the bathroom.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs run the risk of overheating, and in some situations this can cause a fire.
