C95 kicks off annual radio marathon with generous donation

SASKATOON- It’s the fourteenth year for C95’s annual Radio Marathon for Breast Cancer, and they started off on Oct. 17 with a bang.

One-thousand dollars was the first pledge of the morning followed by $10,000 from the Pink Warrior Foundation.

“We host a number of fundraisers throughout the year to make this possible,” said Pink Warrior founder, Kelly Gatzke. “We’re always proud to support the C95 marathon, that’s where [my wife] Fiona at her earliest diagnosis came down and donated $500 and got them to shave her head as her hair started falling out from the chemo treatment.”

Over the last 13 years, the radio marathon has raised $3 million dollars for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.

C95 morning show host Shauna Foster said it started in support of Lisa Rendall, a former C95 co-host who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 35.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

“She gave such a good fight, she passed away three years ago and lost her battle, but we continue to meet more and more women who are in their 30’s and continue to get diagnosed,” added Foster. “You don’t think it will happen but sadly it does.”.

Each year, 600 women in Saskatchewan are diagnosed with breast cancer and 150 die from the disease.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, breast cancer is the number one disease diagnosed in women and the second leading cause of cancer death in Canada.

C95 will broadcast live until 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at The Centre Mall.

“Our big thing is that everything that is raised here stays here,” said Foster.
