York Regional Police said emergency crews were called at around 12 p.m. Monday to DiamondBack Golf Club, located in the area of Leslie Street and Bloomington Road.

Police said there were reports a golf cart went into a pond and a possible drowning.

“The initial reports (were) that the driver of the golf cart — a male person — in fact went into that pond and never resurfaced,” York police Staff Sgt. David Mitchell said.

Mitchell said following the crash, at least two employees from the course jumped into the water “in a desperate attempt to recover this gentleman or to assist him.”

“Unfortunately, despite their best efforts as well, we’ve been unable to account for his whereabouts right now,” he said, but noted it was believed the man was in the pond.

Multiple calls were made to 911 after the initial incident.

A spokesperson for Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services said fire crews searched for an hour and weren’t able to locate anyone.

York police’s marine and air units also responded to the scene.

However, later Monday evening, York Regional Police confirmed that the body of a 71-year-old man from Toronto had been recovered shortly before 4 p.m.

The force said the coroner was headed to the scene to identify the body.

Police said officers do not believe the death is “suspicious in nature.”

Mitchell said earlier that investigators would look at all possibilities as to what may have led to the cart going into the water — including whether there was a mechanical or medical problem, or some sort of accident.
