SASKATOON – With Thanksgiving around the corner, police are targeting aggressive drivers for October’s traffic blitz in Saskatchewan.

Operation Fall Frenzy takes place this Thursday and Friday across the province.

Law enforcement will be paying close attention to speeding, running red lights, not stopping at stop signs, stunting, racing and/or passing to the right on a highway.

According to SGI’s preliminary statistics, aggressive driving contributed to over 10,000 collisions last year, resulting in 92 deaths in Saskatchewan.

“Considering that excessive speed was a factor in nearly one-third of all fatal collisions in the province last year, isn’t it better to be a few minutes late than to end up killing yourself or another innocent road user in a crash?” said Andrew Cartmell, president and CEO of SGI.

The traffic blitz is being held in conjunction with a Canada-wide campaign which continues into the long weekend.

Operation Impact focuses on aggressive drivers, drunk drivers and seatbelt violations from noon Friday to midnight on Thanksgiving Day.

“The real battle is changing the mindset of every driver. You don’t own the road; you share it. Please slow down and obey the rules…lives do depend on it,” said Troy Hagen, Regina police chief.

Last October, Operation Fall Frenzy resulted in a total of 1,079 tickets, including 620 for aggressive driving in the province.
