Owners of Shamrock hotel fined, after fire left people trapped inside

CALGARY – The company that owns a local hotel has been fined $30,000 for safety code violations, after a number of people had to be rescued during a fire.

In August 2012, 11 people became trapped after the Shamrock Hotel caught fire. The fire escape had been decommissioned and was locked, and firefighters were forced to break windows to rescue those stuck inside.

Two fire doors were also left open, allowing smoke to move inside the building, which the owner says were left open for ventilation purposes.

The owners plead guilty to two counts under the Safety Codes Act, and must pay $30,000.

A number of additional charges were dropped, with no explanation from the Crown.
