The owner of Calgary’s historic Shamrock Hotel has been charged with violations of the Alberta Fire Code, after a blaze tore through the building this summer.
The fire on August 28th broke out just after 6:30 a.m. in a rear room on the main floor.
Several of the hotel’s eleven residents were trapped and had to be rescued. Two people were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and several others were treated at the scene.
After the fire was extinguished, the Calgary Fire Department said they were investigating claims a fire escape was chained and padlocked when the blaze broke out.

Louisa K. Ho, the hotel’s owner and sole director, is now facing six charges including four of fire separation doors in the stairwells not being closed, one of failing to maintain the fire separation doors; and one charge for failing to ensure the means of egress, including the fire escape, is maintained in good repair and free of obstructions.
The maximum penalty for each of the offences in $15,000, a maximum of six months behind bars, or both.
The Shamrock hotel is a live music venue located in the 2100 block of 11th Street southeast, and was built in the early 1900s.
Louisa K. Ho scheduled to appear in court in Calgary on November 21st, 2012.
