Raising awareness against breast cancer

SASKATOON – There are a number of events going on in Saskatoon for Breast Cancer Awareness Month with everyday heroes joining the fight.

It’s estimated that 690 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Saskatchewan this year.

Every Friday in October, local firefighters will be showing off their pink in the fight against breast cancer.

“You walk in anywhere into a room and you see a bunch of guys wearing pink,” said Jay Protz, a Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services firefighter.

“It kind of sets a tone as far as what the awareness really means, so I think guys are going to really take this on and make it their own.”

In Canada, over 157,000 women are alive today because they had a breast cancer diagnosis in the past decade.

Fiona McGarry-Gatzke is a co-founder of the Pink Warrior Foundation and one of those survivors. She was diagnosed with stage 3 aggressive breast cancer in 2005.

“It affects everybody we know around us, so having that pink and doing what it means behind it, it’s going to make a big difference and I love that they have given us a month to really concentrate on it and concentrate on making a huge difference,” said McGarry-Gatzke.

Pink Warrior has raised over $400,000 for cancer research.

One in nine Canadian women are expected to develop breast cancer during their lifetime.
