A man is dead following a plane crash near Springbank Airport.
Alberta Health Services EMS confirmed a light aircraft hit the ground just short of the airfield on Friday.
An adult male was declared deceased on the scene while a woman was taken to hospital in critical life-threatening condition.
Soon after the crash, emergency services were at the site near Highway 1 west of Calgary.
Cochrane RCMP said calls of a plane crash with injuries came in just after 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
A Transportation Safety Board spokesperson confirmed the plane, a single-propeller Mooney M20K model, crashed north of the highway at approximately 3:15 p.m.
RCMP officers, EMS and the Springbank Fire Department responded shortly after.
Police said traffic on Highway 1 did not appear to be affected Friday afternoon, but advised motorists to use caution in the area near Calaway Park.
The TSB confirmed a pair of investigators are en route with a field investigation to begin Saturday morning.
In a news release issued late Friday night, Cochrane RCMP said “the plane had sustained damages to the wing and body.”
Mounties also revealed the man who died was 45 years old and that the injured woman is 22 years old. The man was also identified as the pilot.
“The cause of the crash is unknown and still under investigation,” the RCMP said, adding that it does not expect to provide any further updates on the crash.
The Calgary Airport Authority, which runs the Springbank Airport, also said the cause of the incident is not yet known.
“We will support the investigation into the cause of the incident which will be led by the RCMP and Transport Canada,” a spokesperson for the airport authority said in an email to Global News.
“We are saddened by this incident and send our deepest condolences to those affected.”
