Saskatoon bomb squad shows off at Global

SASKATOON – The Saskatoon Police Service Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) spent the morning at Global Saskatoon showing off some of their most useful equipment.

Cst. Matt Maloney shared how they handle emergency situations with their x-ray machine, robots and bomb suit.

“The suit is only used when the robots aren’t, so if the package is in a tight spot that the robot can’t fit in,” said Maloney.

“Robots can be replaced, people can’t.”

The EDU team was last called out at the end of September to a suspicious package, but major threats aren’t very common.

The last was in April 2013, when a possible grenade was spotted on the city’s west side.

A team of eight make up the disposal unit that was implemented in Saskatoon in the early 80s.

Three officers are needed on scene in most scenarios, two behind the scenes operating equipment and the third in the bomb suit.

“If you see a suspicious package report it to 911 immediately, and remember not to touch it,” added Maloney.
