SASKATOON – Fall street sweeping is returning to Saskatoon after more than 20 years.
The City announced on Tuesday 15 neighourhoods are scheduled to be swept this fall to improve drainage and reduce catch basin blockages that may happen during next spring’s snow melt.
“Most neighbourhoods will experience excess leaves this fall,” said Public Works Manager Pat Hyde.
“For this year, the budget and scope of the program is limited to this 15 priority neighbourhoods where a heavy tree canopy over the narrow streets and closer proximity to the river valley make them more prone to collect leaves and debris along the curbs.”
The neighbourhoods to be swept will be scheduled on two priority levels.

Priority one neighbourhoods include Buena Vista, City Park, Caswell Hill, Holiday Park, King George, Richmond Heights, Riversdale, North Park, Nutana and Varsity View.
Those listed as priority two are Exhibition, Haultain, Mayfair, Queen Elizabeth and Westmont, which will be swept after the priority one neighbourhoods and weather permitting.
New parking enforcement techniques will be used during sweeping.
Gone are door hangers and in are sandwich board-style signs that will be places 24 hours before sweeping takes place.
Vehicles left on streets after 5 a.m. will receive a courtesy tow to a nearby street or neighbourhood with no fine.

However, the same is not true for neighbourhoods with white-paper no-parking signs on streets with excessive on-street parking.
In those instances, vehicles will be towed and ticketed.
If the sandwich board signs are successful during fall sweeping, a new bylaw may be pursued to give parking tickets to violators on all scheduled streets.
