Cabbagetown murder suspect to appear in court

VIDEO: (Sept. 30) Adonay Zekarias, 42, is charged with the murder of two Cabbagetown women. Lama Nicolas reports.

TORONTO – A man accused of killing two Toronto women will be back in court today.

Toronto police have charged 42-year-old Adonay Zekarias with first-degree murder in the deaths of Nighisti Semret and Rigat Ghirmay.

Semret was stabbed to death in Cabbagetown on her way home from work in October of 2012.

During the attack, Semret fought back and DNA was found under her fingernails which police say linked Adonay to the murder almost one year later.

DNA evidence was also found in Ghirmay’s apartment months after her torso was discovered in a duffel bag in the city’s west end.

Adonay was originally charged with indignity to a human body but the charges have since been upgraded.

Police believe Ghirmay knew about the attack on Semret and suspect that knowledge ultimately led to her death.
