Charles Kembo admits he committed incest against his stepdaughter but denies he killed her or anyone else.
The accused serial killer from Vancouver made the comment as he opened his defence at his trial in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver on Tuesday.
“Charles will tell you he’s a fraudster but he’s not a murderer,” Don Morrison, Kembo’s lawyer, told the jury.
Kembo then told the jury that when he spoke of feeling shame during a police interview following his arrest in July 2005, he was talking about his sexual relationship with stepdaughter Rita Yeung, one of four people he is accused of murdering.
He said the incestuous relationship was secret and he felt ashamed because incest is a “big taboo” in Malawai, the southern African nation where he was born.
Kembo has pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder.
The trial continues.
