Hundreds evacuated after small fire at Chinook Centre

Hundreds of shoppers, moviegoers and staff were evacuated from Chinook Centre late Sunday afternoon when a small fire began in a non-public hallway near the food court.

Fire department battalion chief Ernie Molineaux said a small container caught fire. Once it was extinguished, the only real damage was scorched paint on the wall.

“The damage was very, very minor,” Molineaux said.

Fire officials continued to investigate Sunday.

Mall security officials decided to sound the alert around 5:30 p.m. when the sprinkler system went off in the hallway, said Paige O’Neill, retail property manager for the Chinook Centre.

Since the mall was to close at 6 p.m., there were fewer shoppers in the building than normal, O’Neill said. “Everything was winding down.”

People were back watching their movies at the Scotiabank Theatre Chinook shortly after 6 p.m., O’Neill said.

There were no injuries. However some mall offices were water-damaged after the sprinklers went off.
