CALGARY – It will be a difficult recovery for a puppy who veterinarians believe is the victim of animal abuse.

Paramedics found eight-week-old Rufus west of Calgary on Tuesday.

The poor pup had his jaw broken in three places.

Paramedics brought the German shepherd mix to the Cochrane and area Humane Society in an ambulance, where his jaw was wired shut by specialists as part of his surgery.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Rufus is now on a liquid diet and sucks his food up through a straw.

Specialists believe the dog’s injuries were likely caused by being kicked in the head, and anticipate it happened about four or five days before he was found.

As Rufus matures he will need to have dental surgery because his jaw will never be properly aligned.

The Cochrane and area Humane Society is also caring for another eight-week-old lab-border collie pup named Emmy Lou who was surrendered by her owners.

She needed surgery to remove an eye that popped out. They believe the injury was caused by an attack from an adult dog.

Both animals will be up for adoption once their recoveries are complete – likely about ten days for Emmy Lou and at least two months for Rufus.
