A 22-year-old man is dead after a shooting in Toronto, police say.
Toronto Police Duty inspector Richard Harris told reporters that officers received a call regarding a shooting shortly after 5:10 p.m.
He said officers were called to 271 Morningside Avenue in the Kingston Road area.
“Police attended, along with members of Toronto Fire and ambulance and located one male who was suffering gunshot wounds,” he said.
Harris said “first aid was rendered,” and the victim was taken to hospital via emergency run.
“I can tell you now, unfortunately, the victim has succumbed to his injuries, this is now a homicide investigation,” Harris said. “The homicide squad has taken over the investigation.”
The victim was identified by police as 22-year-old Akhir Haywood, a Toronto resident.
According to Harris, two people — a man and a woman — were arrested about a kilometre away from the scene.
“With assistance from area witnesses, a vehicle of interest was made known to members of the Toronto Police Service, who subsequently stopped the vehicle and took two suspects into custody.”
Harris said the investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been laid.
Harris said, though, that officers do not believe this was a drive-by shooting, but that it occurred after “some sort of altercation” in the parking lot.
