The suspect in Winnipeg’s latest homicide has a lengthy criminal record and was already facing sex assault charges.

Police announced Monday that 26 year old Damian Geoffrey Fontaine was charged with second degree murder and assault with a weapon after a bloody incident in a north end Manitoba Housing complex last week.

25-year-old Phillepp Rick George Amos died from stab wounds and blunt force trauma about 4 a.m. Friday, September 20 in a courtyard of a Manitoba Housing complex on Robinson Street near Flora Avenue. A 38-year-old man was also hurt .

Police say Fontaine, of no fixed address, was arrested Sunday. Police aren’t commenting on a motive for the killing; officers wouldn’t confirm or deny reports the confrontation was related to Fontaine’s status as an alleged sex offender. Officers say Fontaine was not a resident of the housing complex where Amos was killed; a spokesperson for the police service wouldn’t comment on why Fontaine was in the area, saying that information is part of the investigation.
