Redcliff RCMP received a complaint from a student back on Dec. 13 where the student alleged that at the beginning of 2021, when they were 16 years old, they had been sexually assaulted on multiple occasions by a teacher employed at the high school.

An investigation by Mounties said the offences took place over a number of months.

On Thursday, RCMP arrested Rebecca Lynn McCubbin, 27, of Medicine Hat and charged her with sexual assault along with sexual exploitation of a young person.

McCubbin was released from custody and is set to appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on Jan. 27, 2022.

In the meantime, she has numerous conditions that include not to have unsupervised contact with people under the age of 18 and not to attend places where people under 18 are likely to attend, such as a public park or pool.

School district responds

In a statement, Prairie Rose Public Schools (PRPS) said they were informed of the incident by RCMP on the evening of Dec. 16. Following the information shared, the school division immediately removed the teacher from the school environment.

“They are no longer actively working for the school division or with any division students,” PRPS said.

The school division goes on to say some may have questions, feel upset or anxious by the news and that counselling support through its family school liaison team are ready for those who need it through the Christmas break.

Students and parents of Eagle Butte High School can access support through the school liaison by calling 403-502-2126 or the division liaison at 403-594-2795. Local mental health supports can be accessed by contacting the southeast chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association at 403-504-1811 while local sexual assault and trauma support can be accessed through the Sanare Centre by calling 403-548-2717.

The division said it’s been committed to assisting the RCMP throughout the process. It encourages any student or staff member with information related to the case to contact the Redcliff RCMP directly.
