A 77-year-old woman has died after she was hit by an SUV while crossing Jasper Avenue, the Edmonton Police Service said Tuesday night.
In a news release, police said they were called to a collision near 102 Street and Jasper Avenue at 4:50 p.m.
Police said they were told the woman was walking south on the east side of 102 Street and crossing Jasper Avenue when she was hit by a Ford Escape.
“The pedestrian was reportedly crossing Jasper Avenue in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by the 2009 SUV, which was also travelling southbound before turning eastbound onto Jasper Avenue,” police said.
The victim was taken to hospital where she later died of her injuries.
“Investigators do not believe speed… (or) alcohol were factors in the collision,” police said. “No charges have been laid, at this time, as the investigation is still ongoing.”
Lanes of traffic were closed at the intersection as police investigated the collision, and drivers were asked to avoid the area. Police said they expected the scene to be cleared at about 8:45 p.m.
