Key murder trial witness attempts suicide

SASKATOON – There was an unexpected twist on day three at the trial for George Allgood who is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend and attempting to kill her boyfriend.

Key witness and attempted murder victim, David Ristow, was due to take the stand Wednesday and give his testimony.

Crown Prosecutor Robin Ritter told the court that Ristow is in intensive care at a hospital in serious but stable condition.

Ritter said he was concerned Ristow had tried to harm himself, as he’d done in the past.

“I don’t know but my guess would be it’s not a coincidence,” said Ritter.

“I do know that Mr Ristow has been through more than most people can imagine because of the nature of the injury that he suffered, he was shot with a shotgun, it’s a very serious injury and he lost the woman he loved,” he added.

Justice Grant Currie accepted Ristow’s testimony from the preliminary hearing as evidence.

In the transcript, Ristow said he didn’t even know he’d been shot, let alone who shot him.

Ristow said he had to have his spleen removed and there were still shotgun pellets inside him.

Allgood is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend, Susan Reindhart and Ristow through an open sliding door as they slept in their City Park neighbourhood residence in July 2006.

Reinhardt died in hospital.

The crown prosecution is expected to wrap up its case by Monday with testimony from a number of RCMP who were part of the undercover operation that lead to Allgood’s arrest in 2010.

The trial is set to last two weeks.
