‘The Mortal Instruments’ sequel postponed as first film flops

TORONTO — Production of a sequel to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, scheduled to begin in Toronto this month, has been postponed after the movie failed to catch fire at the box office.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes was due to start filming in Toronto on Sept. 23 and wrap up in early December.

But the first movie — despite a huge marketing push — opened last month in third place with only $9.3 million and has gone on to earn only $37 million worldwide.

City of Bones dropped a whopping 35 per cent in its second week to No. 7 at the box office.

Reviews of the film were not overwhelmingly positive.

In a statement released Tuesday, Constantin Film said it was holding off on shooting a sequel in order to “analyze the results to date and reposition the franchise.”

The Mortal Instruments, starring Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower and Canadian actor Kevin Zegers, is based on the series of novels by Cassandra Clare.
