Emergency crews were called to a huge fire at a housing development in Stittsville on Wednesday evening where a third of the homes under construction could not be saved.
Ottawa Fire Services were called to the blaze at a new subdivision near Ballinora Lane and Culdaff Road, just off of Palladium Drive near the Kanata Auto Park.
The new development consisted of three blocks of 12 townhomes each.
The first OFS crews on the scene confirmed that six of the homes were already fully engulfed in flames, with the large fire spurring many onlookers to post the fiery scenes to social media.
Crews on scene focused on protecting other homes and cooling nearby propane tanks. None of the units were yet occupied, OFS said, and the homes had not been connected to the power grid.
OFS said the fire was under control as of 7 p.m. with 24 of the 36 units saved.
Paramedics treated one firefighter for heat exhaustion on the scene.
There’s no word yet on a cause for the fire.
