Christmas tree recycling this weekend

METRO VANCOUVER – Now that the holiday season is over fire departments and city crews will be providing services to help people dispose of their Christmas trees and knowing where to go can either save you money or help someone in need.

Most cities and towns offer a curbside collection on days when yard trimmings are normally collected, however, some conditions must be met such as cutting the tree into portions no longer than 90 cm.

If you can’t cut down your tree most fire departments, as well as local charities and clubs, will also provide tree recycling services in your community.

If you live in Surrey, the Surrey Fire Department will be in Newton Athletic Park on Sunday, Jan. 3 for donations to its charity while the Fraser Heights Secondary School dry grad group will pick your tree up for a $15 donation.

If you live in Vancouver Lions Club’s will recycle trees on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10 at Kits Beach, Kerrisdale ice rink, Sunset Beach, and Trout Lake Community Centre, for a charitable donation. Trees can also be taken to the UBC Botanical Gardens until Jan.10 for a small donation.

Meanwhile, the Richmond Fire Department will be taking trees on Jan. 3 at Garry Point Park for its charity.

Fire departments in White Rock, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody have similar services available Jan. 9 – 10.

In Langley, Scouts will be busy collecting trees both this weekend and next at various locations.

Many of the services remind you that trees must be decoration free, including tinsel, and it is customary to tip/donate a minimum of $5.

You can also take trees to municipal recycling centres and transfer stations but fees may apply, particularly if you don’t live in the municipality.
