Vancouver actress Carly Pope involved in carjacking

Internet gossip website TMZ.com is claiming local law enforcement sources have told them one of the people involved in Tuesday’s attempted carjacking in downtown Vancouver was TV actress Carly Pope, star of the series 24 and Popular.

Vancouver police Const. Anne Longley would not confirm Carly Pope and her brother Kris were driving the BMW before the carjacking, saying victims’ names are not typically released by police.

However, she did say that various international media outlets have been phoning Vancouver police about the carjacking and its possible link to Hollywood.

Both the car’s 31-year-old male driver and his sister, the 29-year-old female passenger, were treated in hospital for relatively minor injuries and have now been released.

A 24-year-old male bystander, who tried to stop the suspect from taking the car, was also treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

The suspect was treated for a skull fracture but is now in police custody. Whether he was suffering from any mental health-related problems is part of the investigation, Longley said.

Police have requested a number of criminal charges be laid in the incident, and hope to hear back from Crown counsel later today.

Longley this morning released a few more details about the incident.

She said the suspect jumped on the BMW at Cambie and Georgia street, and was yelling and acting erractically. When the driver and passenger got out of the car, the suspect climbed off the vehicle.

The driver then went to speak to a witness who had called 911 while the passenger returned to the car. At that point, the suspect suddenly got behind the wheel of the BMW and careered in reverse along Georgia Street, striking five cars and slamming into the CBC building.

The driver and his sister had no previous dealings with the suspect, Longley said.
