Toronto police investigators say a 46-year-old Toronto man has been charged with impaired driving in connection with a hit-and-run that left a man dead in the city’s downtown early Thursday.
The service said in a statement that it was at around 3:30 a.m. when officers received a call for a fail-to-remain collision at York and Harbour streets.
Investigators said the driver of a black Jeep was driving eastbound on Harbour Street when the vehicle hit the pedestrian.
The unidentified male victim was left on the road with serious injuries. A man, who was described as being about 40 or 50 years old, died a short time later.
Det. Graeme Philipson told reporters Thursday morning that the Jeep was later located on Richardson Street, a short distance east from where the collision happened.
He said a man was arrested shortly after the vehicle was found, noting the Jeep sustained heavy front-end damage.
In the update released by investigators, they said Sebastian Sapeta was later charged with impaired operation of a vehicle causing death and failing to stop at an accident causing death.
Meanwhile, as the traffic services unit continues its probe into the circumstances leading up to the collision, witnesses or anyone in the area with video was asked to call Toronto police.
