OTTAWA – Canadians are being warned not to consume a line of Slim-Fast ready-to-drink meal replacements because they may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
The shakes – packaged in paperboard cartons that contain six 325 mL steel cans – may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said in a statement issued Thursday.
Individual cans may also be sold in certain retail outlets.
But agency officials said that the probability of serious adverse health effects was remote.
No other Slim-Fast products, including powdered shakes or meal and snack bars, are involved in the recall.
Consumers who have purchased the canned Slim-Fast ready-to-drink meal replacement products are urged to discard them immediately and contact the company at 1-800-896-9479 for a full refund.
