REGINA – Emotions were running high outside a Regina church on Friday afternoon, as about 100 people gathered to celebrate the life of Lee Bonneau.

The six-year-old was laid to rest just over one week after he was found fatally injured on the Kahkewistahaw First Nation.

The boy’s casket was carried into the church as friends, family and an entire community came to terms with the death of a child so young.

“It’s one thing to attend a funeral where a person has lived a full life,” said Joseph Bucca, a family friend. “A kid? That’s something you don’t want to see.”

Mourners Global News spoke to on Friday still had many questions about just what happened in Bonneau’s death.

There are still few official details about what led to the incident, although RCMP are treating his death as a homicide, and say his injuries were consistent with an assault.

An update on the case is expected Tuesday.

Grief counsellors will also be available at Bonneau’s school on Tuesday morning when students return to class.

The principal says they plan to deal with the topic open and honestly with students.
