One person was killed and three people were injured in a crash east of Calgary on Monday.
RCMP said the preliminary investigation indicates a three-quarter-tonne truck heading west on Highway 22X was attempting to pass two semi-trucks when it hit an eastbound pickup truck at Range Road 280 at around 4:15 p.m.
A 46-year-old man from Medicine Hat who was driving the eastbound pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene, RCMP said.
There were two passengers, also from Medicine Hat, in that truck, RCMP said. A 54-year-old man was taken by STARS Air Ambulance to hospital with serious injuries and a 16-year-old boy was taken by ground ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the westbound three-quarter-tonne truck was a 37-year-old man from Calgary. An ambulance took him to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. RCMP initially said he had a passenger but later issued a correction, saying he was the lone occupant.
RCMP said Monday night that Highway 22X between range roads 274 and 280 would remain closed “until further notice.”
The crash is under investigation.
