WINNIPEG – With a flutter of wings, about 40 monarch butterflies were released at the Assiniboine Park Zoo Friday for their long migration to Mexico.

The Assiniboine Park Zoo, Monarch Watch and the Monarch Teachers Network tagged and released the butterflies at the zoo’s Shirley Richardson Butterfly Garden on Friday morning. About 75 Assiniboine Park day campers took in the event.

It was the third year the zoo held the event.

“It helps facilitate the monarch migration and it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to educate the young people here today and our visitors about monarch butterflies,” said Janice Martin, curator at the zoo.

The end of August is the peak migration period for monarchs living the Winnipeg area.
