Jasmine Mian is projected to win the councillor seat in Ward 3.
Mian will replace outgoing councillor Jyoti Gondek, who was set to become Calgary’s first-ever mayor.
For the 2021 election, the communities of Macewan Glen and Sandstone Valley join Ward 3, which sits at the north-central tip of the city.

Here’s a quick look at the eight candidates, in alphabetical order.
Hamayun Akbar
An IT professional specializing in finance, Akbar has an MBA in IT and an MSc in international business management from the University of West London. He currently runs a small business in the city and has previously been involved with student politics.
Affordable housing, the Green Line, public safety, recreation, speed limits and job training are all issues Akbar lists on his website.
Jun Lin
Lin has worked for the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission, a crown corporation responsible for marketing the province’s conventional crude oil royalty, since arriving in Calgary in 2008.
Lin ran to be the Ward 3 representative in 2017, coming in third with just more than 25 per cent of the vote. Lin also sought the United Conservative Party nomination for Calgary-North, a nomination that went to Muhammad Yaseen
Lin wants to improve the delivery of city services, manage the city’s finances better, improve public safety and invest in infrastructure like the Green Line
Ian McAnerin
A digital marketer with a legal background, McAnerin is also a volunteer in north-central Calgary, joining the Northern Hills Community Association in 2019.
McAnerin also ran in 2017 to represent Ward 3, and came in second with more than 26 per cent of votes.
McAnerin hopes to see an economic and pandemic recovery, build a better Calgary, and improve Ward 3’s profile.

Jasmine Mian
Having represented Canada at the 2016 Rio Olympics and Commonwealth games, Mian holds advanced degrees in psychology and public policy and has worked in the public and private sectors. She’s also a volunteer for her sport of wrestling and other community groups.
Mian hopes to improve taxes and budgeting, provide better city service, advocate for the Green Line’s northward extension and improve road safety.
Gurbir Nijjar
A professional engineer by trade, Nijjar worked in the energy sector in Calgary and Fort McMurray. He amassed experience in municipal government in management roles at Rocky View County.
He hopes to stabilize the city’s tax base through controlling spending, support residents and businesses as they emerge from the pandemic, and improve community supports.
Nate Pike
A trained paramedic, Pike’s service highlights include evacuating Calgarians during the 2013 flood and as mental health support for first responders during the Fort McMurray wildfires. He has also taught life support programs at SAIT and was a public education officers. He’s also an active volunteer in the community, including with a local community association.
He is also host and executive producer of political web series The Breakdown.
Kumar Sharma
With work experience across many industries in both for-profit and non-profit sectors, Sharma is also known for his work in journalism and entertainment. Sharma has been politically-involved for the past 3 decades, including a trade mission to India with Premier Ralph Klein in 2004.
Sharma wants to limit tax increases, create a better market for job creators, improve infrastructure that supports communities like the Green Line, and strategically freeze city spending.
Brent Trenholm
A journeyman millwright by trade, Trenholm has previous political experience as a one-term city councillor in Campbell River, B.C.
Trenholm hopes to set term limits, conduct a compensation review of council and city administration with hiring and wage freeze, reform taxes and focus on economic development. He also opposes fluoridation of city water.
Trenholm has bene endorsed by Craig Chandler’s Take Back City Hall effort.
In total, 27 people are running for mayor and there are 100 candidates for city council. Eighteen people are running to become Calgary Catholic School Board trustees, while 38 people are running to become Calgary Board of Education trustees.
Election day is Monday, Oct. 18.
