REGINA – An RCMP investigation has now confirmed that the death of six-year-old Lee Allan Bonneau, found dead last week on the Kahkewistahaw First Nation last week, is a homicide.

Police say a caregiver called them about 10:00 p.m. Wednesday to say the child was missing. He had last been seen at 8:30 p.m. playing with some dogs outside the Kahkewistahaw Education and Sports Complex, while a bingo night was going on inside. RCMP received another call around 10:20 p.m. that said an injured child had been found in the community. Bonneau was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

Information uncovered by investigators, along with results of an autopsy performed last Friday, suggest that Bonneau’s injuries were consistent with an assault.

The province has confirmed that Bonneau was in the custody of social services at the time of his death, but have not provided any further details. Meanwhile, the Yorkton Tribal Council Child Family Services are providing crisis counselling to community members of Kahkewistahow.

“We’re working with all families involved, providing what services we can because this incident happened within our jurisdiction and we’re working quite cooperatively with the Ministry of Social Services,” said Raymond Shingoose, executive director of Yorkton Tribal Council Child Family Services.

There are currently no suspects in custody and investigators continue to work to piece together the last hours of Bonneau’s life, and to examine evidence collected at the scene.
