George Smitherman resigned his Ontario cabinet post and deputy premier position Sunday night to run for mayor of Toronto.
He will announce his decision to the public at a press conference Monday morning at Queen’s Park.
Smitherman told Premier Dalton McGuinty he would be resigning from his cabinet position as Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Sunday, effective immediately.
Gerry Phillips, a minister without a portfolio, who held the position in 2007, will be replacing Smitherman as energy minister for the rest of the legislative term. The premier is not expected to name a deputy premier until the new year.
Smitherman will stay on as member of legislature for Toronto Centre until he launches his campaign when the race for Toronto mayor officially begins in March.
Smitherman, a centrist politician, joins a list of just one other contender who has officially confirmed his place in the race, Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti.
But the list is expected to expand.
