Wall not happy with Ontario’s energy minister’s TransCanada pipeline comments

SASKATOON – Ontario’s energy minister, Bob Chiarelli, wants his province to get its cut from TransCanada’s $12 billion Energy East pipeline.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall isn’t vey happy with what was said.

The pipeline would transport Saskatchewan and Alberta oil through Ontario using an existing natural gas line, then build an additional line to Quebec and New Brunswick.

Wall says equalization payments ensure all provinces benefit from Saskatchewan’s economic boom.

He also added that people in Saskatchewan see a lot of trains going by full of cars that are made in Ontario.

“We’ve never asked for our cut of the Ontario taxes that are derived from those cars that go through, and neither would we,” said Wall.

“We have to decide, are we a country or not? Is this a nation? “

Wall said he never heard about the proposal at a recent Premier’s meeting and he hopes the comments are a “one-off” by the energy minister and not the official position of the Ontario government.
