The province’s police watchdog says it is now investigating after a Waterloo Regional Police officer fired his gun at a pickup truck in Kitchener on Tuesday morning.
Waterloo Regional Police say the incident occurred near Grovehill Crescent, where officers were conducting a stolen vehicle investigation.
The Special Investigations Unit says officers arrived at the scene at around 6 a.m. where they found a man and a woman inside an allegedly stolen vehicle.
The SIU says they would not get out, and the man attempted to drive off directly at one of the officers.
It says the officer then fired his weapon at the Dodge Ram pickup truck.
The truck escaped but did hit a few parked cars along the way, according to the SIU.
It says it is unclear if either the driver or passenger were injured.
Around 10 a.m., Waterloo police said the truck had been found out of the region but the suspects remained at large.
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.
