The teenage girl was unconscious when she was taken to a nearby hospital, where she remains in critical condition as of the afternoon. In their update, police have since corrected the age of the victim.

The driver of the vehicle is a 59-year-old man, who suffered minor injuries and shock. He was also taken to hospital and he is expected to speak with investigators later in the day.

Brabant said witnesses told police it appears the man lost control of the car for an unknown reason and hit a pole.

After hitting the teen, the driver also struck another vehicle, but the woman behind the wheel was not injured.
