Liberal Wilson Miao has been elected in the Metro Vancouver riding of Richmond Centre, Global News projects.
With a majority of mail-in ballots for the riding counted Thursday evening, Miao held a lead of more than 650 votes over veteran Conservative MP and incumbent Alice Wong.
The NDP’s hopeful, Sandra Nixon, finished third.
It is a significant pickup for the Liberal party, marking the first time the Grits have won in the district in 15 years.

Wong first won the seat in 2008, and has held it for the Conservatives ever since Richmond Centre was one of the few Tory ridings to survive the Liberals’ 2015 “red wave” in Metro Vancouver.
In 2019, Wong won with almost 50 per cent of the vote.
The victory cements a sweep of Richmond for the Liberals, after Parm Bains unseated Conservative Kenny Chiu in neighbouring Steveston-Richmond East.
