TORONTO — Don McKellar’s The Grand Seduction will open this year’s Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF).
Organizers announced Thursday the Canadian director’s remake of the 2001 Ken Scott film La Grande Séduction will be screened Sept. 19 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
The film, which will have its world premiere a few days earlier at the Toronto International Film Festival, stars Brendan Gleeson, Taylor Kitsch, Gordon Pinsent, Liane Balaban and Mark Critch.

The comedy follows residents of a small Newfoundland fishing town as they hatch a plan to convince a big city doctor (Kitsch) to stay so they can secure a factory contract.
“The Grand Seduction is a laugh-out-loud comedy,” said CIFF executive director Steve Schroeder. “Last year’s Opening Gala was the largest and most talked about in the festival’s history, and we look forward to an even bigger night this year.”
The festival, which will showcase nearly 200 films, runs Sept. 19 to 29.
