Conservation officers killed two cougars after a woman was attacked west of Agassiz, B.C. on Tuesday morning.
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service said the woman suffered serious injuries in the attack, which took place at her remote property in the Harrison Mills area.
A man helped chase the cougar off the woman, who was airlifted to hospital.
The victim is in stable condition after suffering injuries to her head, face and arms, conservation officers said.
Conservation officers said Wednesday that they had determined the attack was unprovoked and predatory in nature.
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service’s predator attack team located and killed two healthy sub-adult male cougars within 60 feet of the attack site.
“We understand people are passionate about wildlife, but the priority of the COS is to ensure public safety, which must come first,” the B.C. Conservation Officer Service said in a statement.
“Relocation/translocation was not an option for these two animals, as the risk to the public is simply far too great.”
