A fire has destroyed a 150-year-old ice cream plant in Markdale, northwest of Toronto.

A spokesperson for Chapman’s Ice Cream says the fire was caused by a welder’s spark while a crew was working on an expansion project at the old creamery building.

Firefighters from five departments were called in to battle the flames.

Sixty homes near the plant have been evacuated as a precaution and a boil water advisory is in effect.

Chapman’s is Canada’s largest independent ice cream manufacturer. The company says it plans to rebuild in Markdale.
