Passengers on board a downtown bus were sent fleeing early Wednesday morning after a man set the vehicle on fire using a flammable substance he had pulled from his backpack.
Police say the suspect, described as agitated, got into a fight with a woman at a bus stop in the Yonge and Bloor streets area at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. The suspect hit the woman in the face before entering the bus.
Several bystanders and the woman approached the man, who had moved to the back of the bus. The man began making a spectacle and removed a bottle of flammable liquid from his bag.
By this time, officers allege, the riders on board the bus had fled, leaving the man alone. He then emptied his bottle onto the rear seat of the bus and lit it on fire.
“Obviously we are concerned for public safety,” said 53 Division Det. Rob Ermacora. “This guy is walking around with flammable liquid at 2:30 in the morning.”
The suspect was last seen getting into a Beck taxi at the corner Gloucester and Yonge after fleeing the scene.
The suspect is described as black, 6’, medium build with a short, black Afro and a goatee. He was last seen wearing a beige unbuttoned shirt with an orange undershirt and beige pants, carrying a dark or green knapsack.
