CALGARY- The death of a bear in Kananaskis over the weekend is serving as a reminder for campers to not leave food out.
On Saturday morning, a four-year-old black bear wandered into a mesh dining tent that had food left in it.
Campers and wildlife officers tried making noise to scare the animal away from the Mount Kidd campsite, but it refused to budge.
Wildlife officers say they had to destroy the bear, as it was not backing off–but don’t take the decision lightly.
“If you move it, you’d more or less be moving the problem, and someone else would have to shoot him,” explains conservation officer Nick Dykshoom.
He adds that the same bear had been rummaging through other campsites since August 6.
The campers staying at the site were evicted, and fined $172. There are numerous signs posted around Kananaskis, warning people to secure their food or face fines.
