Teen dies after collapsing at hockey training camp

ACADIE-BATHURST, N.B. – A 16-year-old hockey player from Bedford, N.S. died Monday after he collapsed on the ice during training camp for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

The Titan released a statement on its Facebook page that Jordan Boyd was pronounced dead at hospital after several unsuccessful attempts to revive him. He was participating in an individual skating drill when he experienced discomfort and collapsed.

“It’s tragic news and we’re all just very upset,” said Chris Bewsher, president of the Bedford and District Minor Hockey Association.

Bewsher said he didn’t know Boyd personally, but for the coaches and players in the system who did, the news has been very difficult to take.

“We’re still trying to come to grips to what it means … this was a young boy, a son to a family, to a mother and father who loved him dearly.”

Boyd played most of last season with  Rothesay Netherwood School as a right winger, scoring 39 points in 41 games.

He was a fourth round pick by the Titan in this summer’s QMJHL draft.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, although the Titan statement said Boyd had been examined before the start of training camp and had no apparent health issues.

The team said it had notified the league about the incident and was working with it to offer support to the parents and other players on the team.
