The Calgary Fire Department says 250 people were forced from a Victoria Park building on Tuesday night after a fire sparked in the parkade.
Crews responded to the 29-storey building at 1 Street and 13 Avenue S.E. for reports of smoke at around 9:30 p.m.
Firefighters arrived to find thick smoke coming from the building and used thermal imaging cameras to determine three vehicles in the parking area were on fire.
“Firefighters were able to attack the fire and quickly bring it under control while other teams evacuated the apartment building due to smoke in the living areas,” the CFD said in a news release.
The fire was extinguished and didn’t spread further but the entire parkade had smoke damage, the CFD said.
Crews used a large trailer-mounted fan to ventilate the parkade.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
