UPDATE: Careless smoking caused Rutland fire

UPDATE:  Tuesday’s townhouse fire in Rutland has been linked to smoking materials.

Crews were called to the 500 block of Lester Road near Leathead after fire broke out on the 2cd floor deck of the townhouse.  The flames quickly spread into the attic.

Damage to the unit is extensive. There were no injuries.

“Although not conclusive, the probable cause of the fire is smoking materials,” says Kelowna Deputy Fire Chief, Jason Brolund.

“The KFD reminds the public to take care and responsibility for their smoking materials. An ash tray or proper receptacle should always be used.”

The fire department responded to a call to 911 at about 7:30 p.m. at the 500 block of Lester Road near Leathead Road.

The fire, which appeared to have started on the back deck of a townhouse, had burned through the ceiling and into the attic.

Platoon Chief Eric Simpson says crews did use a ladder to access the blaze and cut through the roof of the complex but managed to douse the fire from inside the residence.

“We’ve got it knocked down at this time. Right now we’re just doing some overhaul to make sure it hasn’t gone any further. We’ve got two units that are affected badly right now – I haven’t been able to get in to see the extent at this time. As far as we know it’s out right now.”

No one was injured and everyone in the complex was evacuated before fire crews arrived.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
