Ontario has given the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) the green light to proceed to tender on the construction of a new elementary school in the city’s centre.
The province’s investment of $16.2 million – part of a $550-million plan for 2020-21 to build new schools – will cover the costs to construct a new St. Patrick’s Catholic Elementary School on its existing site at East Avenue South between King and Main streets.
The school will be able to host 383 students when completed and is expected to consolidate St. Brigid and St. Patrick Catholic elementary schools.
“Students deserve to learn in state-of-the-art, technologically-connected and accessible schools,” Education Minister Stephen Lecce said in a release on Friday.
“By making investments like this one in Hamilton, we are supporting working families and providing children with the tools they need to reach their full potential and achieve lifelong success.”

The new facility will have 13 classrooms and include settings for kindergarten, special education and 49 child-care spaces.
“Over the next number of months, our staff will be meeting with the two school communities to share information regarding the design and schedule of this exciting project as well as the consolidation process,” HWCDSB chairperson Pat Daly said in a release.
